When Are Tooth Extractions Required?

Tooth extractions are recommended as the last resort when no other treatment is viable. For example, severely damaged or decayed teeth will usually require an extraction. Other common extractions include wisdom teeth that have grown in at an angle or are impacted. Extractions can also be recommended if there is overcrowding and there is no room in your jaw to accommodate the tooth.

How Do Tooth Extractions Work?

We offer two types of tooth extractions in Legacy. The first type is a simple extraction, which is performed for teeth that are visible. Your dentist will provide local anesthesia and ensure your gums and surrounding tissues are thoroughly numbed before starting the procedure. Your dentist will then use dental tools to push and pull the tooth out.

The second type is a complicated extraction, which is performed for teeth impacted under the gums. After your gums and surrounding tissues have been numbed, your dentist will make a small incision to access the tooth. Sometimes, your dentist will divide the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.

The Recovery Process

Tooth extractions are a common procedure. Typically, most patients recover in a few days. More complicated extractions can take up to a week or two to fully recover. We will provide thorough aftercare instructions for you after your procedure. It’s important not to spit or drink from a straw in the first couple of days as it can dislodge the blood clot that has formed. We also recommend eating soft foods for a while following your procedure.
